What makes Gotham different from the many versions told & retold of Batman is that the series takes us back to the very beginning- the origins of Batman. After the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents, many versions fast forward to him falling down a well full of bats, training to be Batman and hey presto, he’s Batman. The older versions focus more on him as an adult playing bad-boy billionaire on one side and Batman on the other. What Gotham chooses to do is take off immediately after the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents- on how a child deals with what fate has dealt out to him. Alongside young Bruce, we get to see how most of the Batman villains we know came to become the villains we love. Gotham focuses on what makes people tick -on the transformation process of individuals towards either the good or bad. Accompanying these down-to-the-minor detailed elaborate sketching of the various characters of Gotham are their names which not only bring out their animal magnetism but makes one think that it’s most definitely a jungle out there in Gotham.
